A telemedicine program in Germany helps to identify patients at increased risk for cardiovascular events using information from the retina, according to a study presented at the World Ophthalmology Congress 2012.
"The eye mirrors vascular and neurodegenerative diseases," said study presenter Ge org Michelson, MD, from the University of Erlangen in Germany. "In particular, retinal microangiopathy correlates with certain systemic diseases such as arterial hypertension, stroke, and diabetes."
